What To Expect

Why visit Nyungwe Forest National Park?

Nyungwe Forest National Park offers breathtaking views of Lake Kivu and, on clear days, the Virunga Mountains. The park features an extensive network of well-maintained walking and hiking trails leading to waterfalls and scenic viewpoints. Top activities include chimpanzee trekking, birdwatching, colobus monkey trekking and the thrilling canopy walk, making Nyungwe a premier destination for wildlife and nature enthusiasts.

Chimpanzees and Colobus Monkeys

Nyungwe Forest National Park is home to 75 mammal species, many of which are small or nocturnal and therefore rarely seen. The main attraction is the daily early-morning chimpanzee trekking, while large troops of over 300 colobus monkeys provide another engaging wildlife experience as they roam the forest canopy.

Birdwatching

Nyungwe Forest National Park hosts around 300 bird species, including 16 endemics, 27 Albertine Rift endemics, and 121 forest specialists. Notable birds include the chestnut owlet, olive and Elliot’s woodpeckers, great blue and Ruwenzori turaco, white-headed wood-hoopoe, barred long-tailed cuckoo, stripe-breasted tit, red-collared babbler, Archer’s and white-bellied robin-chats, Doherty’s bush-shrike, handsome francolin, mountain-masked, black-faced, Chapin’s flycatcher, purple-breasted and regal sunbirds, chestnut-throated and collared apalis, Rwenzori batis, Neumann’s short-tailed warbler, and the white-tailed blue-flycatcher, making it a premier destination for birdwatchers.

Nature and Hiking Walks

Nyungwe Forest National Park, with its steep terrain and extensive network of hiking trails, is a hiker’s paradise. The trails vary in length, difficulty, and the attractions they pass, so it’s recommended to consult a ranger guide to choose the route that best suits your interests. Each trail offers a unique way to explore the forest’s diverse landscapes, from misty ridges and dense canopy to vibrant wildflowers and hidden waterfalls.

For experienced hikers, the Congo–Nile Divide Trail stretches 227 km and takes several days to traverse, though sections can be explored in a one-day hike. Along the trail, hikers experience varied landscapes and local communities, with campsites available for overnight stays—though visitors must bring their own camping gear, while basic supplies can be purchased at shops along the route.

Shorter trails provide more accessible yet equally captivating experiences. The Igishigishigi Trail covers 2 km, taking one to two hours, and offers stunning views of the canopy, wildflowers, birds, and occasional monkeys. The Karamba Trail is ideal for birdwatching and passes numerous fern trees, a former gold mine site, a market, and an old army camp. The Umugote Trail is excellent for primate spotting and birdwatching, with ridges, flowers, and butterflies along the way; on clear days, hikers can see Kibira National Park in Burundi.

Other trails each offer distinct experiences: the Rukuzi Trail is known for chimpanzee sightings and village views, while the Ngabwe Trail leads to a charming picnic and camping site. Muzimu Trail winds through eucalyptus and pine forests, and the Kamiranzovu Trail brings hikers close to waterfalls, wetlands, and swamps. The Isumo Trail passes beautiful tea fields, where visitors can participate in tea picking and follow the process from leaf to cup, ending at Nyungwe’s largest waterfall. Bigugu Trail ascends to the highest peak in the forest, offering views of DR Congo, Lake Kivu, and surrounding islands.

For seasoned hikers, the Imbaraga Trail spans 10 km and rewards efforts with views of waterfalls, while the Irebero Trail offers panoramic sights of Lake Kivu and two of Nyungwe’s highest peaks. The Uwinka Trail is challenging but a prime birdwatching location, and the Umoyove, or Mahogany Trail, provides a gentle walk among the tallest trees in the park, leading to a peaceful waterfall. With such a variety of trails, Nyungwe Forest offers something for every adventurer, from casual strolls to multi-day treks through one of Africa’s most pristine rainforests.
