We offer exciting three-day hikes to summit Mount Nyiragongo, home to the world’s largest lava lake, located in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo within Virunga National Park. After years of unrest, the trail has been safely reopened and managed by the Virunga Foundation, welcoming adventurers to explore what is often called Africa’s last frontier. The journey begins in Kigali with a relaxing stop in Gisenyi on the shores of Lake Kivu, before crossing the border at Goma to begin the climb. Hikers spend the night on the crater rim overlooking the glowing lava lake, descend the next day, and return to Kigali with their driver-guide, completing an unforgettable volcanic adventure.
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport in Rwanda, you will meet your Forest Giant Ecotours guide and transfer to Goma, crossing the border into the Democratic Republic of the Congo. After a briefing about the hike and what to expect, you will stay overnight at your accommodation of choice in Goma.
Accommodation Options:
After an early breakfast, you will take a short drive from Goma to Kibati, the starting point of the hike at Virunga National Park. The hike to the summit of Nyiragongo Volcano, accompanied by experienced guides, takes approximately 5-6 hours, through lush forest and rocky terrain. Upon reaching the summit, you will set up camp near the crater rim, enjoying stunning views of the active lava lake, which are especially breathtaking at night. You will have dinner and spend the night at a shelter at the crater.
Early in the morning, you will descend back to the base and transfer back to Goma. Depending on your schedule, you can explore Goma or relax before heading back to Kigali. Finally, you will transfer to Kigali International Airport for your departure.
