Beyond gorillas, the park is also home to the rare and endangered golden monkeys, found only in the Virunga region. Accompanied by a ranger guide, trekkers follow trails through the forest in search of the gorillas, with treks lasting anywhere from a few minutes to six hours, depending on the group’s location. Once the gorillas are located, visitors may spend one hour observing these gentle giants, taking care to follow all instructions from the briefing and the guide to ensure both personal safety and the welfare of the animals.
Golden monkey trekking in Volcanoes National Park takes place once daily in the early morning, much like gorilla trekking. Visitors are asked to arrive at the park headquarters by 7 am for a briefing on how to safely and respectfully interact with these playful primates, preceded by a local dance performance and a hot cup of coffee. Larger groups are divided into two, and treks are led by experienced and enthusiastic ranger guides. The park currently has two habituated troops open to visitors, totalling 80 golden monkeys. These active monkeys, which primarily live in bamboo forests due to their love of bamboo shoots, make the trek engaging and dynamic as they hop from area to area in search of food, offering a lively and memorable wildlife experience.
The Musanze Caves were formed by volcanic activity, creating an underground space spacious enough for human exploration. Stretching two kilometers, the caves feature walkways and stairs that guide visitors into their dark, mysterious interior. Mount Karisimbi, the highest of the Virunga volcanoes at 4,507 m and the fifth tallest in Africa, straddles the border between Rwanda and Democratic Republic of the Congo along the western rift valley. Its name, derived from the Kinyarwanda word <em>amasimbi </em>meaning “white shell,” reflects its snow- and hail-capped summit. The Karisimbi hike is strenuous yet rewarding, typically taking two days via a route starting from Mount Bisoke, with opportunities to spot birds, several primate species – including gorillas on rare occasions – and enjoy breathtaking volcanic scenery.
Mount Bisoke offers a stunning crater lake at its summit, making the hike a truly rewarding adventure. The trek typically takes around six hours, including approximately two hours to descend, though experienced hikers may complete it in as little as three hours with a shorter descent. Hikers meet at 7 am at the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) offices for a briefing before starting the trek with a knowledgeable ranger guide who shares insights about the mountain and its surroundings. Porters are available for a small fee to assist with luggage, allowing you to hike more freely while also providing valuable employment opportunities for the local community.
Trekking to the Dian Fossey Tomb offers a fascinating insight into the life of Dian Fossey and her pioneering work in gorilla conservation within the Virunga region. Along the trail, you’ll learn about her dedication to protecting gorillas and how her efforts helped establish gorilla tourism. Part of the journey is by car to the trailhead, followed by a 1–2 hour trek through the forest, where you may encounter wildlife such as forest elephants, buffaloes, giant forest hogs and a variety of bird species.
Volcanoes National Park can be visited for gorilla trekking year-round, but seasonal considerations are important. The long rainy season, from March to May, brings heavy and persistent rainfall, making trails slippery and challenging, and reducing wildlife visibility. For the best trekking experience and easier access to gorillas, chimpanzees and other forest wildlife, the dry season is recommended.
